The Loons are Calling
The stakes are a little higher for this year’s Loon Calling Contest. This September in Crosslake, your loon call could land you on a much bigger stage, as the NLC will be hosting the Loon Call Contest Finals with MNUFC, October 28 at halftime on Allianz Field!
As in years past, contestants compete in two divisions: Adults (13+) and Kids (12 and under). Prizes are awarded to the top three loon callers in each division, while each division winner gets a shot at the big leagues. Sign up below to participate in the regional contest on September 26!
Practice Your Calls!
Hoot
A soft contact call usually used by pairs while they forage or swim on their own territorial lake.
Difficulty: 1/10
Wail
A long-range contact call between mates, also used to warn of mild alarm, like eagles overhead.
Difficulty: 5/10
Tremolo
A high-intensity alarm call usually directed to close-range threats. Also used during flight.
Difficulty: 8/10
Yodel
A territorial call made only by males toward trespassing loons during territorial disputes.
Difficulty: 10/10
